Paul "Welsh" Nickel
Paul Nickel was a New Jersey artist who constructed his work in the American Folk Art tradition. His inspiration came from old samplers. He laboriously painted, cut and applied canvas, and found objects, and self framed them. He signed the pieces Welsh, and was reknown for his incredible take on his subjects. He was in the Merchant Marine so many of his subjects are ships or sea related. He also drew from Americana for his subjects. He was widely and enthusiastically collected . Anyone who has been lucky enough to own one of his pieces usually came back for more. Mr Nickel passed away in 2006.
